Friday (Jumu'ah) FAQ
Answers to the most common questions about Jumu'ah prayer, Friday Sunnahs, Surah Al-Kahf, salawat, the khutbah, and more.
What is Jumu'ah?
Jumu'ah is the weekly congregational Friday prayer in Islam. It replaces the Dhuhr prayer for those upon whom it is obligatory and is preceded by a khutbah (sermon).
Who must attend Jumu'ah?
Jumu'ah is generally obligatory for adult Muslim men who meet the required conditions. Women are not obligated to do so. Those with valid excuses such as illness or certain essential duties may be excused.
Is Ghusl mandatory before Jumu'ah?
Performing ghusl before Jumu'ah is a highly emphasized Sunnah according to the majority of scholars. Muslims are also encouraged to wear clean clothes, use miswak, and apply perfume (for men).
Is Surah Al-Kahf compulsory on Friday?
No. Reciting Surah Al-Kahf on Friday is a recommended Sunnah and not an obligation.
When is the accepted hour on Friday?
The Prophet ﷺ informed us that there is a special hour on Friday during which duʿāʾ is accepted. Scholars differed regarding its exact timing, with many considering the period before Maghrib to be the strongest opinion.
Can I talk during the khutbah?
The khutbah should be listened to attentively. Muslims are encouraged to avoid unnecessary speech and distractions while the imam is delivering the sermon.
Can I use my phone during the khutbah?
It is best to silence your phone and avoid using it during the khutbah so you can focus on the sermon and avoid distracting others.
Should I go early to the masjid?
Yes. Arriving early for Jumu'ah is from the recommended Sunnahs and allows you to prepare yourself calmly before the khutbah begins.
Can women attend Jumu'ah?
Yes. Women may attend Jumu'ah if they wish, although the Friday prayer is generally not obligatory upon them.
