Muharram 1 Practice
Muharram 1 Bismillah 113 Times
A practice mentioned by some scholars and transmitted from certain righteous people regarding the first day of Muharram.
The Practice
On the first day of Muharram, write:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
113 times
It is mentioned that whoever writes it and keeps it with him may be protected from many difficulties by the permission of Allah.

وعن بعض العارفين أن من كتب بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم في أول يوم من المحرم مائة وثلاث عشرة مرة وحملت لم ينل حاملها مكروه هو وأهل بيته مدة عمره
Imam Muhammad ad-Dimyati (rahimahullah) mentions this narration in:
Nihāyat al-Amal, p. 278
Alternative Writing Style
Some scholars also mentioned writing it separated as:
ب س م ال ل ه ال ر ح م ن ال ر ح ي م
This format is mentioned in some Mujarrabāt compilations.
Important Etiquette (Adab)
Because the Basmalah contains the blessed Name of Allah, it must be treated respectfully.
- Maintain purity when handling it.
- Do not take it into washrooms or toilets.
- If carrying it, remove it before entering such places whenever possible.
- Whether written joined or separated, it still carries sanctity and should be respected.
