What is the Islamic New Year?
The Islamic New Year begins with the month of Muharram, the first month of the Hijri calendar.
Unlike many celebrations around the world, the Islamic New Year is not centered around parties, fireworks, or countdowns. Rather, it is a time for reflection, gratitude, and spiritual renewal.
The Islamic calendar is called the Hijri Calendar, which commemorates the migration (Hijrah) of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from Makkah to Madinah.
Why is Muharram Special?
Muharram is one of the four sacred months mentioned in the Qur'an.
Surah At-Tawbah 9:36
During the sacred months, believers are encouraged to increase good deeds, avoid sins, and strengthen their relationship with Allah.
The Story Behind the Hijri Calendar
The Hijri calendar was formally adopted during the leadership of Umar ibn al-Khattab (ra).
After consultation with the Companions, the migration (Hijrah) of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was chosen as the starting point of the Islamic calendar.
The Hijrah marked a turning point in Islamic history — a journey of sacrifice, trust, patience, and complete reliance upon Allah.
Why Was Hijrah Chosen for the Islamic Calendar?
The Companions did not begin the Islamic calendar from the birth of the Prophet ﷺ, nor from the beginning of revelation, nor from his passing. Rather, they chose the Hijrah — the migration of the Prophet ﷺ from Makkah to Madinah.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3934
Ibn Hajar al-ʿAsqalani (rahimahullah) explains that the year of the Prophet’s ﷺ birth and the beginning of revelation had differences of opinion regarding their exact dates. His passing was known, but remembering it repeatedly would bring grief and sadness. So the Hijrah was chosen instead.
The Hijrah marked the beginning of a new era: Islam became established, the Muslim community grew, and the Prophet ﷺ worshipped Allah with greater safety in Madinah.
Surah At-Tawbah 9:108
Some scholars connected this verse to the blessed beginning in Madinah and the foundation of the Muslim community upon taqwa.
