The Virtues of Muharram
Discover why Muharram is one of the most blessed months in the Islamic calendar and how to make the most of its rewards.
What is Muharram?
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic year and one of the four sacred months chosen by Allah.
It is a month of reflection, worship, repentance, fasting, and spiritual renewal.
The arrival of Muharram reminds us that time is passing and that every new year is an opportunity to return to Allah.
A Sacred Month
Allah mentions in the Qur’an that there are twelve months, and among them four are sacred.
Surah At-Tawbah 9:36
The sacred months are Muharram, Rajab, Dhul-Qaʿdah, and Dhul-Hijjah.
During sacred months, believers should be extra careful to avoid sins and should increase righteous deeds.
The Month of Allah
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ referred to Muharram as “the Month of Allah.”
This special title shows the honor and virtue of this blessed month.
Best Voluntary Fasting After Ramadan
Muharram is one of the greatest opportunities of the year for voluntary fasting.
The Prophet ﷺ taught that the best fasting after Ramadan is fasting in Muharram.
This makes Muharram a beautiful month to revive the habit of fasting, especially for those who want a strong spiritual beginning to the Hijri year.
The Day of Ashura
The greatest day within Muharram is Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram.
How to Benefit From Muharram
Muharram Reflection
Ask yourself:
- What did I achieve spiritually last year?
- Which sins do I need to leave behind?
- Which habits should I build this year?
- How can I become closer to Allah?
Muharram is more than the first month of the year. It is an invitation from Allah to begin again.
